Appointment Scheduling Tips for Carpenters
Your schedule is your profit. If you lose a day to a no-show, a “quick” repair that turns into half a day, or a job-site emergency, it can wipe out time you needed for a $5,000–$20,000 cabinet install or a $5,000–$15,000 deck build. This guide gives you carpenter-specific appointment scheduling strategies you can use today—built around real job types, real time blocks, noisy job sites, and the fact that you can’t answer the phone mid-cut.
1) Set “job-type time blocks” (so you stop guessing how long things take)
Stop booking everything as a “2-hour slot.” Your work has predictable phases: measuring, demo, cutting, install, scribing, sanding, and cleanup. Each phase has different risks for running long (uneven walls, out-of-square corners, hidden rot on decks).
Use time blocks based on the job customers actually call about. For example:
- Trim/molding touch-ups ($500–$2,000): book in 2–4 hour blocks. These often run long when corners aren’t 90° or the paint line needs careful caulk.
- Built-in shelving ($1,500–$5,000): book a 60–90 minute on-site measure + a separate install day (usually 4–8 hours depending on wall conditions and scribing).
- Custom cabinets ($5,000–$20,000): break into “measure/design approval,” “shop build,” and “install + punch list.” Customers think it’s one appointment; you need at least 2–3 scheduled events.
- Deck building ($5,000–$15,000): split into “footings/framing day(s)” and “decking/rails/stairs day(s).” Weather delays are normal—plan for them instead of pretending they won’t happen.
When someone calls and says, “It’s just a small built-in,” translate that into your block: measure visit + install day. Don’t let their words set your calendar.
